Schiff conducts from the keyboard...securing crisp ensemble and cogent longer-term grasp of structure in his forward-moving tempos...The wiry tone of his restored circa-1859 Bluthner grand may initially disconcert, but the clarity of its bass enables many orchestral details to come through that one rarely hears in latter day battles between big orchestras and thicker-toned Steinways...Enlightening indeed.

What he and the OAE offer is not so much to do with authenticity as with freshness and ‘detoxification’, something akin to letting the daylight into Miss Havisham’s room and removing the cobwebs from her wedding cake.
Presto Classical 4th June 2021
Schiff's whole point of doing it this way is to strip the music of all of its accumulated performance traditions, and what the Bluthner piano may lack in oomph is more than made up for by the mellow smoothness of its tone and the clarity of textures across the various registers of the instrument...This warmth is pleasingly complemented by the orchestral playing...I was really surprised by how much this recording changed the way I both heard and thought about these concertos.
The Guardian 3rd June 2021
As you would expect from Schiff…the performances of both works are wonderfully rounded and mature…the sound of his Bluthner ? with its much less overpowering lower register than we are used to hearing from modern Steinways ? blends beautifully with the soft grained OAE strings.
